Covid-19 Update
From 24th February the government has removed the legal requirement to isolate if you have a positive Covid test. Guidance still recommends that you stay at home if you are feeling unwell. At church we are continuing to recommend that face coverings are worn if possible. Please speak to a warden if you have any queries about this.
PCC Meeting 23rd February 2022
The PCC met on Wednesday evening. The February minutes will be available next month but two things which we considered we wish to share immediately with all members of our church.
Finance – the effect of loss in Church income following the sad deaths of some of our Stewardship generous donors was highlighted. The PCC agreed that this matter required urgent attention, with an update of the overall financial position against budget and likely increase in hire costs for our facilities to take account of larger utility bills both to be considered next month in order that appropriate measures can be implemented.
The PCC is delighted to confirm that the proposal to accept the revised tender from BCE Northern, to carry out the Ground Redevelopment work, was approved unanimously. The company can commence the project after Easter, once amended Faculty has been sanctioned by Diocese. Work is estimated to take approximately 2 months, with minimum disruption to Church life. Very grateful thanks was expressed to BARG for their endeavours and drive to bring us to this point together with Tony Garland who has secured £1000's in several successful bids.
The minutes from the PCC Meeting on January 19th 2022 can now be viewed in full below.
Anna Chaplain Commissioning Service,
Sunday 6th March
Anna Chaplains are named after the widow, Anna, who appears with Simeon in Luke’s gospel. They offer spiritual support to older people in a variety of ways, made even more important throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.
Revd Clare Connors and Beryl Austoni both feel called to this ministry, and on Sunday 6th March at 4pm, they will be commissioned by Bishop Mark at Newcastle Cathedral. Everyone is invited attend, to show support for their commitment.
A message from Beryl
"I am to be commissioned as an Anna Chaplain at a service in Newcastle Cathedral and it would be lovely to see some of you there to support me. At the service you will hopefully find out more about what Anna Chaplains do as part of the work in church communities. As the date approaches please keep me in your thoughts". Thank you, Beryl Austoni.
World Day of Prayer 2022
This year’s service will take place on 4 March at 2pm in St Paul’s Church, Whitley Bay. The theme is ‘I know the plans I have for you’ and it has been prepared by the women of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
It is always good to share in this day and join our prayers with those of Christians throughout the world. Please join us for this special time – it is a service for everyone. Afternoon tea will be served after the service.
LENT 2022
Lent Course 2022
This year we are joining our neighbours for the Deanery Lent Course, which is called "What's the Story?". The course starts on Wednesday 9th March and meets once a week for five weeks, following five parables from the gospel of Luke to see how these stories speak into the stories of our own lives today.
There will be sessions available in person and online (via Zoom), and there will be sessions in both in the afternoon and evening, so as many people can partake as possible.
If you would like to express an interest in this course (with no commitment), please sign up below.
Live Lent
Embracing Justice is the Church of England's theme for Lent 2022. It invites us to examine our own lives truthfully, to see the world more deeply and to pray - for the church and the world far and near - that 'justice may roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream' (Amos 4.24).
For each day of Lent, there is a daily Bible reading, a short reflection and a prayer, as well as a practical challenge. Each week follows a different thread through the many stories of justice in the Bible to explore how God works with humanity to bring justice, wholeness and salvation to all.
The booklet costs £1.99 (Kids £1.50) and is available to buy online below.
Eco ideas for Lent
Many of us give up something or take up a positive action over the 40 days of Lent. Looking for inspiration?
Sanctuary Guild AGM The Sanctuary Guild will meet in Church on Tuesday 8th March at 2pm for our AGM. Contact Sheila Torrance if you have any queries.
Thanks William Walker is most grateful for the many cards, good wishes and prayers following his hip operation. It was so comforting to feel held by the people of St Marys.
Pentecost Raffle We didn't have a raffle at our Autumn Fair last year, so we are hoping to do one throughout Eastertide, with a draw at Pentecost (Sunday 5th June 2022, also the Jubilee Weekend). We are looking for someone who would be happy to coordinate the raffle. If you think this could be you, or if you think you could help in some way, please get in touch with the office. Thank you!
