Church in the Kittiwake

The weekly meeting in the Kittiwake to discuss current issues from the perspective of our faith has become a highlight of the week for me. This last week we met to discuss philanthropy in light of recent news items on Bill Gates. Philanthropy derives from the Greek; friend or fondness of humanity. There are many examples of philanthropists in this country and more locally in the North such as Armstrong and Rowntree. We mulled over the reality of philanthropy, how the riches that the good deeds are based on are made and the motives behind the use of the riches, from assuaging guilt, tax dodges, reputation and adoration, through to a real desire to help a group.

In comparison , Christian charity or love is a very different concept. It is based on 'agape' or unconditional love and so should not have any conditions attached and be focused on the greatest needs, not on the favourite cause. This is not easy as we are fallible human beings and will mostly tend towards the areas that interest us or where we can achieve the most.

What the discussion did raise, was the clear divide between rich and poor and how we as people of faith stand in the gap and look at how we walk with those in need to achieve a better life.

Church Window Replacement

We are currently in the process of a new project; replacing the windows in the church. This is for 3 key reasons:

  1. The windows are in need of repair (They are nearly 100 years old)

  2. To improve the security of the building

  3. Most importantly: To improve the churches ability to retain heat and reduce our carbon footprint.

    I must emphasise:

THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS IN THE SANCTUARY.

For more information click the link below which will take you to our webpage. David Tompkins will explaining more at our services on a future date.

A New Congregation: 'Marianum'

In 2024 I promised to start a 'New Congregation', to build a missional group, who will be nurtured in faith with the aim of being focused on the community in which they live, and to provide an alternative form of worship to that offered on a Sunday morning. With Claire joining us, this is now possible.

This is not a replacement for our Sunday morning services, but an opportunity to reach new people and people who may travel some distance out of parish to find a style of worship that engages them. Our Sunday morning worship is flourishing but we need to recognise that this style of worship may not be to everyone's taste. In addition, our Sunday morning congregation is not growing younger, and many have served tirelessly. As a busy church, we need new people to help us to continue to serve our community as it has in the past.

The format is :

Worship songs to begin

A confession

Readings (Based on a theme not the lectionary)

Prayers

Worship songs

Shared Meal

The service will be family oriented where there will be worship and teaching for adults and the chance to dance and play for children. If you interested in supporting us with your presence (You will not be asked to do a job) then please let Claire know.

Administration

PCC have approved the appointment of a temporary administrator to review the office and finance systems prior to the appointment of a permanent administrator. Both posts will be 10 hours per week and an advert will be posted in the lobby of church and available on the website. We are looking for someone who has accounting/book-keeping experience and knowledge. For further information please contact the office on office@stmarysmonkseaton.org.uk

Funeral Ruth Wolf

The funeral for Ruth will be on Friday 21st February at 10.45 in church followed by the private family committal at Whitley Bay Crematorium. All are invited to remain in church during the committal to share memories and enjoy refreshments. The funeral will be live streamed and we still need volunteers to serve tea and coffee. Please speak to a warden if you can help.

Journey through the bible

It's not too late to join!

Would you like to know your bible better? Claire is offering a story based look at the bible. It's a 12 week course exploring six old testament and six new testament stories to give an overview of the journey of the people of God. We will hear the stories, there will be a short time for discussion and questions and then lunch. Next Meeting is Wednesday 12th February.
