Eco Tip for the Week

Be aware of microplastics. The microplastics from plastic washing up sponges are so small they pass through the wastewater treatment plants and head into our rivers, lakes and eventually the ocean. They have a negative impact on aquatic life, humans and can accumulate in food chains. If they are disposed of in landfill, they take hundreds of years to decompose and leach harmful substances into the soil and water.

Here at St. Mary’s, we have changed over to using eco sponges. Sometimes ignored but fighting for its place at the kitchen sink.

If you would like to try an eco-sponge at home, there will some on the eco table this Sunday. Sorry, not free, but only to cover the cost.

Thy Kingdom Come

Thy Kingdom Come is a global ecumenical prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus. What started in 2016 as an invitation from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to the Church of England has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer.

This year, from Ascension Day to Pentecost, we will be using the 2025 Thy Kingdom Come Novena on the Lord's Prayer as a focus for our worship.

On Saturday 31st May we will combine with Whitley Lodge Baptists in a Walk of Prayer, starting at Whitley Lodge at 10.30am.

Alpha Course

Our Alpha Course is now underway, but all are still welcome to join us for the opportunity to explore some of the 'Big Questions' about life and faith.

Thursday evenings at 7.00pm in St Mary's Monkseaton. Each session will end with a light meal and refreshments.

Please note there will not be an Alpha Course on Thursday 29th May due to the Ascension Day Eucharist.

Kneelers and Table Tennis Table

We are in the process of 'downsizing' the contents of the church and have the following items left. If you are interested or would like to reclaim, please contact Mike in the office by 6th June.

In the gathering space: Long kneelers from the lady chapel before re-ordering, Mothers Union Kneelers (All dedicated by individuals, names are on the back of the kneelers).

On the stage: table tennis table.

PCC Meeting 21st May 2025

The PCC met for the first time to discuss business of the parish since the Annual Parochial Church Meeting. There were some big decisions made including:

a. Approval of the reviewed Safeguarding Policy and procedure for responding to a concern.

b. Approval of purchase and fitting of a projector and mobile screen screen in church to enhance engagement with worship and a new live stream camera. This will be using the proceeds of the Autumn Fair 2024 as promised last year.

c. The choir being repositioned where the organ console currently is, following congregation comments that they appreciated the openness of the chancel on Easter Sunday and the choir being in the congregation. This will be a 3 month trial.

d. A review of finance including a reduction in occasional hall hire fee to £25 per hour for the first 2 hours and £20 per hour for subsequent hours. Also a recognition that with improvements to church including the windows, projector and renewal of the west end roof the reserves are significantly reduced. The PCC expressed its gratitude for the generosity of the congregation in giving for the running costs of the church and also the donations made so far for the windows. The link below provides more information on the financial situation.

e. An Eco action plan put together by Marion Oakes was approved and the PCC took a decision to work towards achieving the green highlighted areas. Please see the attached link, where you can download the report.

f. The PCC decided that the memorial garden should feature a rose garden where people can dedicate a rose to a loved one. The design is to be created to fit in with the existing plots and to mark that the garden to the north west of the church is a place of peace and reflection.

g. Standing Committee members for this year are clergy, the wardens, the treasurer and 2 trustees from the PCC, Kate Stobart and Jane Walker.

A reminder of what we are aiming for and why do we need to move towards sustainable living?

Sustainable living means making choices today that will positively impact the planet tomorrow and will ensure the long-term viability of our planet and its resources. It means aiming to minimise any damage we might do to the environment by being responsible with what we use throughout our lifetime. This includes making choices that keep waste and pollution low and preserve biodiversity. By preserving natural habitats and ecosystems, using resources efficiently and making lifestyle changes, this will help future generations meet their own needs and ensure we all have a better future. In simple terms, Caring for Creation.
