Easter Message from the clergy
We are nearing the end of Holy Week facing the climax of remembering the suffering of an innocent victim, Jesus of Nazareth, who is to be executed by crucifixion. We spend Saturday reflecting and remembering what Jesus gave before we rejoice at first light on Easter Day as we remember the Risen Christ.
In a world that seems so fractured at the moment, let's rejoice together that there is a sure and certain hope of better times to come as we model the love, compassion, forgiveness and healing of Jesus Christ. Have a very happy Easter and know that you are loved as much as all in creation by God.
Food Bank Plea
The majority of us at St Mary's are fortunate in that we don't have to go without food.
Sadly the Bay Food Bank are very short on supplies with demand outstripping what is available. Any donations of dried or tinned food and toiletries would be appreciated please. If you can put them in the food bank box under the table in the lobby.
Easter Flowers
A big thank you to all those who donated towards the Easter flowers this year, especially those who donated in memory of loved ones.
Holy Week

Maundy Thursday Evening
The last two years we have had a meal prior to the Maundy Thursday evening Eucharist. It is our intention to do so again this year, so are looking for volunteers to cook and serve. If you can help, please speak to Nigel or Claire.
Please also sign the sheet in the lobby if you would like to join us, so we have an idea of numbers.
Following the Eucharist there will be a Watch from 9pm to midnight. We need a minimum of two people in church at any one time and there is a list in the lobby for volunteers to sign up to be stewards.
Good Friday Walk of Witness
From Whitley Lodge to St Pauls, gathering at Whitley Lodge at 11.15am and leaving 11.30am.
Sunrise Service 5.30am
We will be holding a Sunrise service on Easter Sunday, meeting at the Rendevouz café in preparation to light the bonfire for 5.30am. It will be a joint service with Whitley Lodge Baptist church and will include the Easter acclamation, renewal of our baptism vows and Holy Communion. It will be followed by breakfast in St Mary's. If you wish to attend please sign up at the back of church to provide guidance on numbers needing to be catered for.
Dressing the Cross: Easter Sunday
You are invited to bring flowers to our 10.00am service on Easter Sunday to dress the cross as part of our celebration of the Risen Christ.
Parish Walk
There will be no Parish Walk in April, as it would fall on Easter Saturday. Join us for the Good Friday Walk of Witness (above) instead!
Christian Aid Event. 17th May 2025
Next month, Christian Aid Week, will highlight and raise funds for those battling with poverty, injustice, and the effects of the climate crisis. This year the heatwaves and draughts in Guatemala are featured, along with the difficulties faced by of the indigenous farmers.
At St. Mary’s, we will be hosting our annual fundraising event on Saturday 17th May, for Christian Aid. We are fortunate to be able to enjoy our gardens, seaside and countryside and this year we would like to incorporate these themes into our fundraising event.
As well as our traditional soup lunch, quiz, and baked goods stall, we will have a plant stall and an ‘Outdoors’ themed stall (garden/camping/sports equipment, outdoor toys, outdoor clothing etc.) Please, nothing too big and unmanageable and donors to take away any unsold items.
Now is the time, to plant seeds and nurture plants for the Plant Stall, sort outdoor articles for the Outdoor Stall and browse favourite recipes for the Baked Good Stall. All to be brought to church in the days running up to the event.
Thank you in anticipation of contributions.
Justice and Peace team.
Note From Northumbria Police
The police have advised us of increased reports of people trying doors in the area recently. We are fortunate to be in a very safe area, but please take sensible precautions and lock up at night and when out.
Church Window Replacement
There is now information at the back of church regarding the replacement of the church windows.
We need to replace all the windows (except the stained glass ones) for several reasons. The two main reasons are:
- Safety. There is a real risk of the current windows breaking and causing damage or injury.
- Heat. New windows will provide much better insulation as we move towards ‘net zero’.
The total cost is going to be between £75,000 and £85,000 depending on the VAT status of the work.
The PCC have agreed that the work should be funded from reserves, grants and the church community.
Please look at the display and the website:
Following our meeting of the PCC on 19th March, we are reviewing how people are able to donate to the windows fund. If you would like your donation to be recorded, then please pay by cheque, payable to "The Parochial Church St Marys Concerts".
