Miranda Wright

Miranda has a busy teaching practice in the North East, teaching at  Durham and Newcastle universities and with the choristers and choral scholars in Durham Cathedral. She is a regular teacher with  NYCGB, Eton Choral Courses and a masterclass leader for Samling Academy.

Miranda studied with Ann Lampard and at the Royal Northern College of Music, where she was a multiple prize winner and Peter Moores Scholar. Whilst at college, she was featured in a BBC2 series, Opera Works, with Jonathan Miller.

She became a Samling Scholar in 1999, a member of John Elliot Gardiner’s Monteverdi Choir and performed for several years in professional roles before deciding to concentrate on her teaching career. Miranda organises regular concerts for her ensemble “The Miranda Wright Singers” and directed youth opera productions of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with them at Sage, Gateshead in 2011 and 2012. In 2013, She was director of Samling Academy Opera’s first production, Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring, at Saltburn Community Theatre and Sage, Gateshead. In 2014, she devised and directed her own group of singers in Tell Me The Truth about Love, a programme of art song and poetry at The Witham, in Barnard Castle.  In 2015, she directed Britten’s The Little Sweep with the choristers of Durham Cathedral and her own undergraduate pupils and Samling Academy’s opera, Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges  at Sage, Gateshead. More recent productions have included Samling Academy opera, Venus and Adonis by John Blow, performed at The Witham, Barnard Castle and Hall 2, The Sage, Gateshead with John Butt and the Dunedin Consort, in 2018.

The Singers

All the singers in the concert are pupils of Miranda Wright. They come from all areas of her teaching practice, including Durham University, Newcastle University and her private practice. Some of them have been accepted by audition for the prestigious Samling Academy, in which Miranda is a leader.

One important aspect of Miranda’s teaching practice is the development of performance opportunities for her students. These performances give her pupils vital experience that they can take with them as they develop their careers and prepare for auditions.

The performances are built upon two principles: the proper, rigorous training of young voices for technical confidence, at an appropriate level for their age; and professional performance based on confident self-presentation.

A licensed bar is available before and during this concert.
