St Mary’s is a lively church with a variety of interests, abilities and tastes. Music is central to our worship: we like to sing, we like to play, and we are looking for someone to guide us forward, expand our repertoire, and encourage the gifts of all people.

We are a Church of England parish church in Whitley Bay. Our worship is probably best described as modern catholic, and is inclusive, relaxed, and sacramental, with a congregation aged from 0 to 90+ years.

We like to sing, and our main service on a Sunday usually features several hymns and songs, as well as a sung mass setting. Music is usually, but not exclusively accompanied by our two-manual, recently-installed organ, or grand piano.

We do not have a choir, but rather singers from within the congregation help to lead others. We have had visiting singers join members of our congregation in leading music for specific services around Christmas.

Outside of our worship, we host a series of concerts throughout the year.

Music Sheets

Although an accomplished organist is certainly preferable, we are looking for a proficient keyboard musician with a passion for music who is able to encourage others, enabling our whole church community to use their voices and talents to the best of their abilities. The right candidate will

  • be someone who can embrace a broad range of musical styles;

  • be able to encourage people of all ages and help develop their talents and skills;

  • help to grow the musical life of our church;

  • be excited by the opportunities that this post brings;

  • be able to work with our clergy and worship coordinator to expand our repertoire and enrich our worship.

There is plenty of scope for the right candidate to develop new things, according to their own talents.

We are hoping that with the right candidate we can be flexible in working out an arrangement that suits everyone, but ultimately we are looking for

  • musical accompaniment most Sundays and Festivals throughout the year (perhaps arranged collaboratively with some of our current volunteer musicians).

  • the introduction of some singing/instrumental rehearsal time during the week for those in our congregation who have more to offer or who want to improve their skills.

  • an openness to develop links with neighbouring churches and organisations, our local schools and families, encouraging music from our whole parish.

The payment for this new role is open to negotiation but falls within the pay brackets for a church of our size as recommended by the Royal School of Church Music, plus fees.

Familiarity with the role of music in Christian liturgy is preferred.
